Als die junge Sophie von Anhalt-Zerbst – die spätere Katharina die Große – an den Hof kommt und auf dem Weg zur Macht eine Verbündete braucht, wird Warwara ihre engste Vertraute. Schließlich erklimmt Katharina den Zarenthron – aus der unerfahrenen Fremden wird eine der mächtigsten Frauen ihrer Zeit.

Die Autorin

Eva Stachniak (* 1952 in Wrocław) ist eine in Kanada lebende Schriftstellerin.

Eva Stachniak lebt seit 1981 in Kanada. Von 1984 bis 1986 arbeitete sie für Radio Canada International. Von 1988 bis 2007 war sie als Dozentin für Englisch und Geisteswissenschaften am Sheridan College tätig. Mit ihrem Debütroman Necessary Lies gewann sie 2000 den Canada First Novel Award. Ihr zweiter Roman Garden of Venus wurde in sieben Sprachen übersetzt. Ihr aktuelles Buch The Winter Palace (dt.: Der Winterpalast) erscheint 2012 im Insel Verlag. Eva Stachniak lebt zurzeit in Toronto.

Meine Meinung

Das erste Mal als ich das Buch entdeckte war ich zunächst fasziniert vom Titelbild und der Titel hat mich sofort angesprochen. Zurzeit bin ich sowieso im Fieber Russlands, da ich Anna Karenina von Leo Tolstoy so liebe und da dachte ich, das würde auch dem Buch in irgendeiner Weise gleichkommen.

Die Autorin schreibt fesselnd, spannend und interessant.

Ich konnte nicht genug von Warwara bekommen und liebte ihren Schreibstil und die kurzen Abschnitte der Geschichte, was das Lesen und Weiterkommen um einiges erleichterte.

Ich fühlte sofort mit der jungen Sophie, später Katharina, mit, empfand ihr Leiden und schimpfte mit den "Bösen" in dieser Geschichte. Aber auch Warwaras Leiden und Leben hat mich in tieferem Sinne geprägt und mich zum Nachdenken gebracht. Auch wenn man in der Gunst der Kaiserin steht hat das nicht nur Vorteile - das Leben verändert sich und man wünschte sich doch wieder zurück. Keine Spione, keine Spitzel, keine ernsthaften Probleme.

Dennoch ist diese Geschichte wundervoll erzählt und das Ende hat mich sehr berührt. Eine weitere "Freundin" ist von mir gegangen.

Ich bin sehr gespannt auf den zweiten Teil Die Zarin der Nacht und hoffe, meine Freundin wiederzusehen!
